Overview of Spinal Cord Injury

Most spinal cord injuries cause a certain degree of loss of movement and sensation below the
location where the injury was sustained. A key distinction in spinal cord injury is whether the
damage is complete (meaning there is a large amount of damage to the nerves and tissue of the
cord) or partial. Those who have partial spinal cord injuries may experience significant recovery with
treatment. Unfortunately, those who have complete spinal cord injuries will never return to the life
they had before the accident that caused the injury.

In addition to paralysis, spinal cord injuries will cause many other long-term health issues. Those
    issues can include blood pressure
and heart dysfunction, bowel and bladder problems,
    breathing difficulty, muscle spasms, loss
of reproductive and sexual function, increased risk
of blood clots, bed sores and pneumonia.
People with spinal cord injuries usually have a
shorter life expectancy as a result of their injury.

A spinal cord injury can be equally devastating to the family of the injured
    person.

A person who had been active and independent will now need assistance performing everyday
tasks. Everything from homes to vehicles will need to be modified in order to be accessible to the
    injured individual.

If someone else was responsible for causing the injury, filing a legal claim may provide some
compensation you for your emotional losses and help pay for the considerable expenses your
family will have. At the U.S. Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center, our members can consul with to
