    Causes of Brain Injury

Brain Injury Can Occur Without Direct Trauma

Traumatic brain injury can occur whenever a blow
    or sudden acceleration/deceleration imparts enough
force on a person's head to cause the brain to move
within the skull. The force does not need to fracture
the skull and cause direct trauma to the brain, nor
does it have to strike the brain directly. For example,
a whiplash-type injury in a motor vehicle accident can
result in damage to the brain.

Some of the most common causes of brain injury are:

    •        Car accidents
    •        Motorcycle accidents (brain injury can occur whether the rider was wearing a helmet or not)
    •        Bicycle and pedestrian accidents
    •        Athletics or sports-related injuries
    •        Slip and fall accidents when a person strikes his head on any hard surface
    •        Falling objects that strike a person's head inside a store or warehouse
    •        Shaken baby syndrome
    •        Construction site accidents

    What causes brain injury:

While the outside of the skull is smooth, the inside is rough and contains bony protrusions. Within
the skull, the brain floats in a protective sea of cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid acts as a shock
absorber to dampen movement. In the sudden acceleration/deceleration of a car accident, the brain
can strike the bony structures inside the skull, causing bruising, swelling and shearing of nerve
    fibers and brain tissue.

If another person is responsible for causing the brain injury, filing a legal claim may help your family
secure financial compensation to replace lost wages and pay for the ongoing rehabilitation and
treatment your loved one will need. At the U.S. Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center, we can't change
the past, but we will work hard to help your family obtain the assistance you will need for the future.
